CONCEPT OBJECT SOUND SCULPTURES, 2022
Acrylic on bespoke sound sculptures
Commissioned by Concept Object
Commissioned by Concept Object, a UK-based design studio producing limited edition high-fidelity sound systems, this project involved the creation of hand-painted, one-off speaker sculptures. Each work transforms a functional audio device into a site for painterly intervention.
Working directly onto the sculptural casing, luminous gradients, geometric motifs and illusionistic forms unfold across faceted surfaces. Neon triangles, floating spheres and star-like points of light hover against atmospherically layered grounds. The visual language draws on recurring elements within the wider practice, where digitally inflected forms appear suspended in deep, constructed space.
The speaker, an object designed to transmit sound, becomes a hybrid between artwork and device. Painting expands beyond the canvas to inhabit a technologically charged form, merging image, architecture and acoustic function. The works operate simultaneously as sculpture, design object and image-system, collapsing distinctions between fine art, consumer technology and contemporary lifestyle culture.
As with much of the practice, the project engages questions of mediation and immersion. If painting traditionally addresses the eye, these works extend its reach into the realm of sound and embodied experience. Surface, light and illusion are reconfigured around an object that structures how music is heard and space is inhabited, positioning painting not as static representation but as an active participant in contemporary environments.
