LIKE THERE IS HOPE AND I CAN DREAM OF ANOTHER WORLD, 2022

Acrylic on wooden stools
Commissioned by Hospital Rooms for Hauser & Wirth London

Created for the Hospital Rooms exhibition There Is Hope and I Can Dream of Another World at Hauser & Wirth London, this series of hand-painted wooden stools extends painterly language into functional object.

Each stool features a triangular seat surface painted with luminous geometric forms. Concentric rings, neon gradients and reflective highlights suggest depth and internal glow, while the triangular motif introduces a structural, almost architectural clarity. The imagery draws on recurring visual elements within the wider practice, where digitally inflected forms appear polished, dimensional and suspended, despite being constructed through flat paint.

By situating illusion on a utilitarian object, the work collapses distinctions between image and furniture. The stools operate simultaneously as sculpture and seating, inviting proximity and interaction. Colour migrates from wall to object, from vertical surface to horizontal plane, reorienting how painting occupies space.

As with much of the practice, the work negotiates the tension between virtual aesthetics and material fact. The glowing forms appear screen-like, yet are achieved through careful modulation of acrylic on wood. Within the exhibition context, the stools contribute to an immersive environment shaped by artworks developed within NHS mental health services, offering surfaces that are at once graphic, tactile and quietly optimistic.
