CHARLEY PETERS X HOUSE OF VANS, 2020
Acrylic on skate deck
Commissioned by House of Vans and The Auction Collective
Commissioned by House of Vans and The Auction Collective, this hand-painted skate deck was created for the exhibition Objects of Art: The Skateboards at House of Vans, London. The work was later auctioned in support of Centrepoint, the UK homeless charity.
The elongated horizontal format of the deck becomes a compressed pictorial field. Floating spheres, checkerboard grids and sharply defined colour planes unfold across a turquoise ground. Metallic, illusionistic forms hover in contrast to flat graphic pattern, generating tension between depth and surface.
The checkerboard motif operates both as a digital signifier and as a subtle reference to Vans’ visual identity. Within the wider practice, grids often function as markers of mediation, invoking pixel structures, design software interfaces and constructed image-space. Here, they intersect with softly rendered spherical forms that appear to drift across the deck’s curved edges.
By translating painterly illusion onto an object associated with movement and subculture, the work collapses distinctions between fine art, design and street culture. The skate deck becomes both support and stage, carrying a language of virtual space, geometry and suspension into a functional, portable form.
