OH BABY, MY EYES GLAZE OVER, 2020

Emulsion paint on wall
Southampton City Art Gallery

Oh Baby, My Eyes Glaze Over is a site-responsive wall painting installed within Southampton City Art Gallery. Two large, faceted spheres appear to hover against the white expanse of the gallery wall, suspended in quiet equilibrium.

Rendered in shifting gradients and angular planes, the forms draw on the visual language of 3D modelling and low-polygon digital graphics. Light seems to move across their surfaces, creating the illusion of volume and rotation. Yet the work remains entirely flat, executed in emulsion directly onto the wall. Depth is constructed through colour, edge and tonal transition rather than physical relief.

The painting stages a perceptual ambiguity: viewers encounter what appears to be a pair of floating objects, but on closer inspection the image collapses back into surface. The work oscillates between digital illusion and material fact, using the conventions of screen-based imagery to test the limits of painting within architectural space. In doing so, it transforms the gallery wall into a site where virtual form and physical reality briefly converge.
